A monthly dose of inspiration and action

You’ve seen them all over Lancaster County: there’s nothing more quintessential than a covered bridge (except maybe a whoopie pie).

But, why are they covered?

The answer is deceptively simple: a wooden bridge that is exposed to the elements will last around 5-10 years. A covered bridge made of the same materials will last more than 100 years. A bridge that is built hastily and isn’t tended to will weather and crack, but a bridge that is built with intention and protection—a bridge to and from a place that you want and need to travel to over and over again because it is foundational— has to be built to last.

When we think about our community and the differences between us, what are the bridges we’ve let decay?

What are the covered bridges we’ve built or need to build?

Inspired by John Paul Lederach’s idea of critical yeast, we share stories of people whose everyday efforts to bridge divides expand what’s possible. We like to call them weavers, those who thread (think of a spider web!) our community together in big and small ways and help others do the same around them, including you. Their actions create ripples of connection and belonging, and remind us that what feels small can, over time, reshape a community. One thing we know for sure about spider webs: they love to build on bridges.

Covered Bridging exists to bring these people and their stories into view, and, in doing so, to invite you to seed change in your own way. There’s a good chance you already are, and we want to share your story.

In a moment when national narratives shape how we see one another, these stories ground us in something more local and human. They show that connection is already happening when neighbors choose to see each other fully, listen deeply, and act with care.

Each month, you’ll receive local stories of people working to weave connection across difference, national spotlights related to the work, and upcoming events related to finding community connection.

The Weaver Map

We are working to literally plot the points of connection happening across our community so we can know that we are not working alone. Explore the ways that your local community members are building covered bridges and finding commonality across difference, and help us find more to add to the map!

The Covered Bridging Deck

Though we come from different backgrounds and perspectives, our sense of place in Lancaster County gives us a shared starting point for connection. You might learn you have something in common with a total stranger, or you might learn something new about someone you’ve known for years. Regardless, the Covered Bridging Deck is sure to be a spark for exploring the connection we all have to this community.
